Audu counts to six
Fiction
Audu, a young trader from Kano, had saved for years. At last Hauwa’s family sent word about the kayan daki. “Everything in sixes,” said her aunt. “Six bags of rice, six bags of millet, six fabrics.”
Audu counted carefully: six bags of rice, six of millet. At the market he bought six fabrics. Then, to be generous, he bought a seventh. His mother frowned: “Now the count is spoiled!”
So Audu gave the seventh fabric to his aunt, as a gift for her good advice. “Now,” she said, laughing, “the count is six, and the heart is seven.”

The tale is invented. The custom of goods in units of six comes from Salamone’s description of the kayan daki.
